Vampire Lestat may soon return to the big screen in 'Tale of the Body Thief'

Tom Cruise starred as the vampire Lestat in "Interview With the Vampire."

If "Twilight's" vampires are too romantic and sparkly for you, then you're in luck. Best-selling author Anne Rice revealed to her fans on her Facebook fanpage Tuesday that the fourth novel in her "Vampire Chronicles" series is about to be turned into a film.

"Imagine, Brian Grazer and Ron Howard's company, has optioned the motion picture rights to 'The Tale of the Body Thief,' " she wrote.

Yes, the beautiful, blond, bad-boy vampire Lestat, a central character in her series, may soon return to the big screen. The bloodsucker famously appeared in theaters in 1994's adaptation of the first book in the series, "Interview With the Vampire." Tom Cruise played the role of Lestat in the Oscar-nominated film, but no rumors yet on whether the actor will reprise the role.

In "Body Thief," Lestat grows lonely and suicidal, but soon finds himself in a human body after a psychic steals his immortal vessel.

According to EW.com, Imagine will be partnering with film producers Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orci -- who worked on 2009's  "Star Trek" -- to bring Lestat to life again. The magazine also reports that the producers are aiming to have a script to show studios in a month.

Ryan Reynolds might work...Chris Evans, Casper Van Dien, Alexander Skarsgard, Jensen Ackles. I think any one of them could pull off a great Lestat.

It's well known that Anne Rice likes Matt Bomer - maybe we'll see him :-)

I agree..I've read all of Anne Rice's books up until she started writing about Jesus, and "Body Thief" was certainly the weakest. "Servant of the Bones" would have made a decent film, but it doesn't cash in on the vampires that are hot right now.

Tom Cruise did a good job as Lestat. I love the Anne Rice books and I have all of them. The tale of the body thief was difficult to follow but it will make a good movie. I will watch it. I vote for Alexander Skargard, he would make a good Lestat.

Just, please, please, PLEASE make it better than that god-awful "Queen of the Damned" movie!

Alexander Skarsgard would make an EXCELLENT Lestat; in fact, I think he'd be absolutely perfect. He's already got plenty of practice pulling off the charming-but-badass-and-also-broody from his character Erik in "True Blood."

Van Dien, Skarsgard, Reynolds ??? Did you actually read the books ? How old do you think Lestat is supposed to be (look) ?? Of course, Armand a teenage cherub was played by a very swarthy Antonio Banderas in Interview...... so who knows...LoL

Benedict Cumberbatch. Seriously. Check him out in "Sherlock".

Oh...Sherlock is an updated 21st century version, UK series. The guy would make a great Lestat.

I think the majority would like to see Cruise again.

The Vampire Lestat would have made a better movie! But I guess this one will do. People who have not read the books are going to be so lost!!!

Tom Cruise did an excellent job but he is TOO SHORT! Aleksander Skarsgard would be good, but he's already the well-known vampire Eric...someone new and legit please!

I could not buy Tom Cruise as Lestat. I sat thru the whole movie thinking "that's Tom Cruise pretending to be a blond vampire." In fact, for most Tom Cruise movies I think "that's Tom Cruise pretending to be a <fill in the blank>. He has managed to disappear into some of his characters, more so now that he is getting older, but none of his early stuff really works for me.

So I'm going to second the vote for James Marsters. That is a vampire I could go for.

I liked Tale of a Body Theif personally, and I have ready all of her books up until she found jesus as well. I could be on board with James Marsters of Alexander Skaarsguard or I wonder what Cillian Murphy would look like with blonde hair? Talk about those blue eyes! But doesn't he switch bodies with Raglan James...so whoever would be playing that character would be who we would be staring at most of the movie. More importantly who should play Ragland James? Or David Talbot??? hmmm?? I would vote James Cromwell for David...I LOVE that guy!

I could definitely go for James Marsters, but as he is well identified with and loved as the BTVS vampire Spike, maybe someone new. Anne Rice always talks of Matt Bomer... or how about Josh Holloway from Lost?

ps, I don't think anyone wants to see TC as Lestat again - that was not a great casting decision...

Slight understatement, lol... That had to be one of the absolute WORST casting choices ever, for sure!

I like Matt Bomer but don't think he'd be a good Lestat. I think he'd be great if they made any of the Witching Hour books into movies. Josh Holloway seems to be a little too redneck-y to pull off the dramatic, flashy, regal Lestat. I agree tehat Alex Skarsgard would be good; he's got the look and the pedigree, but as someone mentioned he's already inhabited the role of Eric, so maybe not. I think we might need a newbie in the role, someone who has the chops but is not well known. Certainly not a Ryan Reynolds or any of the hot-guy-of-the-moment types.

YES! The Witching Hour is a fascinating book, and IF well done, could make for a fascinating movie as well.
